About me

I have been working as a film translator and screenwriter for over twenty years, with filmmakers and producers  from all over the world. My job is my passion. It brings together my love for film, languages, art, knowledge and creativity. I come from a French/English background, and I studied film, anglophile civilization and literature, specialising in Australian film and culture, before moving on to a degree in subtitling/dubbing for the cinema and TV industry.

Although I learnt a lot through my academic years, it is working closely with so many talented filmmakers and producers that have made me realise how much film adaptation is an art of its own. I never get tired of learning, expressing my creativity through my work and exploring its many possibilities.

Adaptation and translation

Every feature film, documentary or screenplay deserves the best possible voice to be understood by a wide audience. “Connect with the subject, illuminate the material, highlight the talent at work” –these are my rules for a great film adaptation.

Screenplays

Being part of a new project in the early stages of production is extremely exciting. With a great translation and, of course, if the original story is good, a script has a chance to reach producers, directors and actors. It is a big responsibility as a translator, but well worth the reward when the project comes to life after many drafts and long hours of work. The ultimate thrill is to accompany a film from the page to the screen.

Subtitling

“Good subtitles are subtitles nobody notices“. They should convey the meaning but also the style, the ideas and the emotions in very few words. It is, for me, the most faithful and creative form of adaptation for fiction work, very close to its subject.

Dubbing and voice over

Documentaries are often rich with information. “Dubbing” or “voice-over” allows more text to be translated and therefore makes understanding easier when scientific or historical subjects are involved. For example, in the case of a wildlife documentary, dubbing often evolves into screenwriting, the poetry of the words carrying the beauty of the footage.
